A Pioneer Woman’s Life
Catherine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie were both sisters born only 23 months apart. They were both born in England and became professional writers before they got married to their Scottish husbands and immigrated with them to Canada, in 1832.
In Catherine’s book “The Backwoods of Canada.” She talks about moving into a new cabin and all the work she as a woman has to do to make the cabin habitable. It clearly shows that she had to work very hard on the house while her husband did some of the larger jobs. But she doesn’t describe Canada as a bad place or a hard place to live in.
In Susanna’s book “Roughing It in The Bush” Susanna talks more about the struggles rather than the responsibilities she has. She talks about how people have to return to the “old country” to collect land from relatives. She doesn’t seem to enjoy Canada as much as her sister.
In conclusion I believe that Catherine is more just speaking about what she does in Canada the experiences she has. And her sister on the other hands speaks about all the struggles and how Canada isn’t really what people back in England made it seem to be.
